AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution will also work on Nvidia GeForce cards

AMD has revealed its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology, which is seen as its rival to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). As part of this, the chipmaker revealed that the FSR will work on Nvidia cards as well.

FSR uses upscaling technologies to help boost framerates and provide high-quality, high-resolution gaming experiences without the need for a new graphics card. Since being teased, it has already been described by PC users as a timely solution during a worldwide GPU shortage.

A main selling point of the FSR technology will be official support for competitor’s products, on top of the entire line of Radeon RX graphics cards. That FSR will work on Nvidia means that gamers won’t have to switch over to AMD cards to experience the technology. In fact, AMD said it will work with almost any graphics card, from integrated GPUs to ultra-enthusiast cards. (Read: GUIDE: Should you buy an AMD graphics card?)

AMD will release more details on FSR on June 22, which is the official release date. The technology is expected to be capable of being ported onto multiple platforms without restriction upon launch thanks to its GPU flexibility.

FSR promises to deliver up to double the frames in select games, with up to 2.5x the performance at 4K resolution in FSR “Performance” mode. It does not require any per-game training, nor does it rely on motion vectors or history buffers. The feature’s four quality modes are Ultra, Quality, Balanced and Performance.

FSR differs from DLSS in the sense that it uses a state-of-the-art spatial upscaling algorithm to achieve near-native resolution with high-quality edges and detail. DLSS, meanwhile, has AI rendering that boosts frame rates to allow gamers to turn up settings and resolutions. Moreover, it only works on newer GeForce RTX-branded graphics cards that contain proprietary AI tensor cores. In other words, even Nvidia’s GTX GPUs will not be compatible with DLSS.

AMD demonstrated iFSR on Gearbox’s Godfall, which is optimized around their RDNA 2 graphics architecture. FSR can increase performance by as high as over 300% on desktop Radeon RX 6800XT at 150 FPS using the “Performance” mode. This is while the game was running at 4K native resolution on the EPIC preset and with ray-tracing enabled.

The company confirmed that FSR will be supported by 10 studios. It is currently working with developers on implementing the feature within games and engines.

“With FidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD has delivered another amazing platform-agnostic feature that’s easy for developers to implement,” Counterplay Games CEO Keith Lee said.

AMD, through its website, is now asking users to say which games they want FSR to support.
