Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2 lead The Game Awards 2023 nominees list

Creator and host Geoff Keighley finally revealed the nominees for the 2023 edition of the Game Awards. The list was packed with a plethora of titles, topped by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 with eight nominations each, including for game of the year.

Of course, with such a stacked year, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 weren’t the only games with multiple nominations at the Game Awards. Following close behind were Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with seven nominations, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder with five each, and Resident Evil 4 and Street Fighter 6 with three each.

In terms of publishers, first-party platform holders led the way Nintendo had the most nominations at 15, followed closely by Sony at 13,  and Xbox at 10. Among third-party publishers Epic Games had nine; Capcom, Larian, and Square Enix all had eight; Electronic Arts had six; and CD Projekt Red and Riot Games both had four nominations.

Interestingly enough, despite having a major release this year, Bethesda Softworks only had one nomination for Starfield in the best role-playing category.

The Game Awards giving multiple nominations to Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 should come as no surprise. Both games were long-awaited sequels to beloved games that seemingly came out of left field to dominate. Baldur’s Gate 3, in particular, was praised for harkening back to old-school computer RPGs and delivering a complete product not focused on microtransactions.

The same seems to be the story for the other games with multiple nominations, most much-awaited follow-ups to beloved franchises that innovated in one way or another.

The Game Awards 2023 itself will take place on December 7 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. In addition to finding out how many awards Baldur’s Gate 3 and the other top nominees win, the event is also expected to showcase new trailers for upcoming games, just like last year.
