Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC is an Epic Games Store exclusive

After being exclusive to the PlayStation platform for over a year now, Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally coming to PC. But there’s a catch. The long-awaited port is exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

Square Enix made the announcement at the 2021 edition of The Game Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The PC release of Final Fantasy VIII Remake has been a long time coming. It was first launched on PlayStation 4 as a timed exclusive in April 2020, indicating that a PC release would follow a year later. But April 2021 came and went, and in June of this year, Square Enix published FFVII Remake Intergrade, a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive with modest graphics enhancements and a new DLC chapter starring Yuffie called EPISODE INTERmission.”

That exclusive deal must have expired six months ago, because FFVII Remake is now available on PC. Of course, there’s another exclusivity here, just like with Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts PC editions. For the time being, FF7 Remake is exclusively available on the Epic Games Store.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, here’s Square Enix’s official explanation of what was added in Intergrade:

In FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, play as ninja Yuffie Kisaragi as she infiltrates the shadowy Shinra corporation to steal a powerful materia and restore glory to her homeland. Play alongside new characters and enjoy an expanded gameplay experience featuring multiple new combat and gameplay additions. This adventure brings new perspective to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake story that cannot be missed.

The announcement only stated that it will be arriving on the Epic Games Store, as such, Steam users may be out of luck, at least for the time being. Intergrade looks fantastic on the PS5, and with a 60FPS performance mode and a 4K option, it should look much better on PC. (Read: Top 7 favorite summons from Final Fantasy)

As for its upcoming sequel, Square Enix has assured fans that development on Final Fantasy Remake Part II is proceeding smoothly. That said, the company has given no indication of when the game will be released. Meanwhile, Square Enix is working on Final Fantasy XVI as well as Ever Crisis, a mobile game that will expand on the Final Fantasy VII universe and unify all of its various elements under one roof. In support of this initiative, Square Enix recently released First Soldier, a free-to-play battle royale game for smartphones set before Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII Remake for PC arrives on the Epic Game Store on December 16, 2021. In the meantime, here’s the trailer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake PC version from The Game Awards.
