Genshin Impact mobile earnings go over $3 billion

Less than two years since it took the mobile gaming industry by a storm, action role-playing game Genshin Impact reportedly reached $300 billion in mobile earnings worldwide.

According to a report from Sensor Tower, the China-based handheld game “has surpassed $3 billion in global lifetime player spending across the App Store and Google Play.” According to the enterprise-grade market intelligence, Genshin’s developer miHoYo has raked an average of $1 billion every six months since launching on mobile devices in September 2020.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-esque game was able to reach that whopping amount from loyal Travelers (game users) spending cash on game-related currencies like the Genesis Crystals and Gnostic Hymn premium battle pass that allows for users to purchase in-game items. “Following its worldwide release, the title took 171 days to generate its first $1 billion on mobile, not including spending through third-party Android stores.,” the report from Sensor Tower said. “It then took an extra 195 days to accumulate a further $1 billion–resulting in the title picking up $2 billion in its first year alone.”

“Genshin Impact crossed the $3 billion milestone 185 days later, meaning the game has averaged revenue of $1 billion every six months, making it one of the most successful mobile games of all time,” they added, with global earnings from the PS4, PS5, and PC versions not yet included in the statistic

Counting only the iOS platform earnings, 30.7 among the $3 billion come from China. Genshin’s home country topped the list as the game’s number one revenue-generating country, generating $973.3 million to date. Japan follows suit with 23.7 percent of the earnings and the United States ranks third with 19.7 percent.

“While the title can be considered a global success, Genshin Impact generates most of its revenue in Asia, which accounts for close to 70 percent of total player spending to date,” the report added.

Further analysis on the game’s success also shows that the open-world game was the top mobile title in Q1 of 2022 worldwide after bringing in $567 million in revenue. NCSoft RPG game Lineage W ranks second at $272 million. Uma Musume Derby, Monster Strike, and Rise of Kingdoms complete the top 5 after earning $236 million, $197 million, and $185 million respectively.

Additionally, the huge earnings speak for the game’s active player base too. During the first quarter of this year, Sensor Tower says the game has a 44 percent increase in monthly active users year-over-year.

“Its success has been powered by miHoYo’s impressive live ops strategy, which has put the title well on track to hit the $4 billion landmark later this year.,” the report assured.
