Gran Turismo 7 to get PlayStation VR support

Gran Turismo 7 is the one first-party PlayStation 5 title that would benefit the most from a VR implementation. As such, it should come as no surprise that the game is getting PlayStation VR2 support when the latter launches on Feb. 22.

Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, made the announcement at Sony’s press conference at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show. He confirmed that Sony’s “Real Driving Simulator” would be getting support for the PlayStation VR2 via a free update when the latter launches.

As a racing simulator, Gran Turismo 7 is arguably a natural fit for VR. The game already features an in-cockpit view that also allows for head/camera control via the right analog stick. It’s easy to see the latter being adapted for use in VR.

The addition of Gran Turismo 7, strengthens the launch lineup for the PlayStation VR2. In addition, to GT7, also launching on the $549.99 (Php 30,600) device are Horizon Call of the West—an exclusive VR spinoff of the popular open-world games—as well as VR versions of Resident Evil Village and No Man’s Sky. Ryan promised that the PlayStation VR2’s “launch window” would have “more than 30 games.” How long that launch window will be, however, Ryan didn’t specify.

Beyond that, Ryan also stated that the popular VR rhythm game Beat Saber would be coming to PlayStation VR2 at some point in the future.

Support for the PlayStation VR2 wasn’t the only Gran Turismo-related news dropped by Sony. The company also released a new featurette for the upcoming Gran Turismo movie—a biopic telling the story of GT player-turned-professional racecar driver Jann Mardenborough. The film stars Orlando Bloom and Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough and is directed by Neil Blomkamp.

The film is currently in post-production having filmed on location at the Hungaroring late last year. It’s scheduled to hit theaters sometime in the summer of 2023.
