Super Mario Bros. film lands all-star voice cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Chris Pratt
So, are we ready for another Super Mario Bros. film?
Talk about star-studded: The upcoming Super Mario Bros. film will have a voice cast which features Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen’s Gambit), Jack Black (School of Rock), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) and more.
Pratt and Taylor-Joy will voice Mario and Princess Peach, respectively, according to a Variety report. Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will play the eternal accomplice Luigi, while Black will play Bowser, the villainous turtle who kidnapped Princess Peach.
Rounding out the cast are Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogan (Superbad) as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (Teen Titans) as Kamek, Fred Armisen (Portlandia) as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike.
According to a Polygon report, Charles Martinet, the voice actor who played Mario and Luigi, is also involved in the animated film. So, does this mean we’ll also see Wario and Waluigi in the film?
Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets) is making the film, which is expected to roll out in theaters late next year, via Universal Pictures. Nintendo and Universal are co-financing the project. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the OG Super Mario Bros., is producing for Nintendo.
“The production so far is constructive and going very well, and both parties are learning a lot from each other,” said Miyamoto. “We humbly ask that fans wait just a little longer for the premiere, and we hope they look forward to seeing the unique characters from Super Mario Bros. on the big screen.”
It’s worth saying that this isn’t Nintendo’s first attempt to make a major feature-length film of the Italian plumber. Do you remember 1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros. movie? (Read: 8 Great video game remakes that let us revisit past classics)
