TEAM SIBOL is looking for Street Fighter V players to represent the county at the 19th Asian Games

The Philippine national esports team, TEAM SIBOL, will be hosting qualifiers for Street Fighter V players to try out and qualify to represent the country at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Esports first made its Asian Games debut at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, as a demonstration event—not part of the standard medal competition. Since then, esports has become a familiar part of Asian sporting events. The 2019, 2021 and 2023 SEA Games had esports as medal events.

Now, the event that first trialed the idea of esports at an Asian multi-sport event is finally having them as medal events, and one of the games will be Street Fighter V. (Read: Esports titles for the 19th Asian Games revealed)

The choice of Street Fighter V is interesting. The game’s upcoming sequel, Street Fighter 6, means that the former is being sunset from major competitions outside—especially with the much larger prize pool publisher Capcom is putting in the latter’s pro tour.

That said, its age also means that players now have years of knowledge and experience with the game. With the 19th Asian Games possibly being one of the last major tournaments for the game, this means that the level of competition will be pretty high.

Of course, this also raises the stakes for anyone looking to represent the country at the event as part of SIBOL, being the final chance for Filipino players to show their skills in Street Fighter V.

As for any players looking to represent the country, the qualifiers are set to take place on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at PlayBook Circuit Makati. Interested players can register over at this link. In addition, SIBOL have also made the ruleset for the qualifiers available for players to view.

The 19th Asian Games will take place from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
