Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a duplication glitch; here’s how to do it

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a day-one item duplication glitch that lets players make copies of their weapons and shield. The glitch, which can help players work around the game’s weapon degradation system, is quite easy to do.

Twitter user Modoki_returns discovered the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom item duplication glitch, which was later shared on YouTube by BLAINES. The glitch allows players to duplicate any weapon, bow or shield they discover for the first time (items labeled as “???”).

As with a number of item duplication glitches on Nintendo Switch, the trick involves some fumbling about in the game’s menus.

As shown in the video above, the glitch requires players to do the following steps.

  1. Drop the strongest weapons or shields in the players inventory
  2. Make sure no weapons or shields are equipped.
  3. Pick up a weapon or shield with a “???” symbol.
  4. When the info message is displayed, press the start/+ button to open the inventory screen.
  5. Press the Y button to sort the items
  6. Equip an item that the player is fine with getting rid of.
  7. Exit the inventory screen.
  8. Open the inventory screen again and drop the item the player wants to get rid of.
  9. Pick up the item.

Upon completion of step number 9, the item should now change into the new, previously unidentified item that the players just picked up.

Take note that the glitch apparently only works if the weapon that the player is picking up and copying is the strongest in their inventory. As such, it’s recommended that they drop anything that might get in the way first. (Read: Gran Turismo 4 cheat codes discovered nearly two decades after the game’s release)

Should players make a mistake, they can still re-load their most recent save to start over.

As for whether or not Nintendo will patch out the glitch, the company has patched out similar glitches in the previous Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before. With this in mind, anyone looking to duplicate their items using this method should do so before Nintendo takes any action to fix it.
