Discord is coming to PS5 as part of its big 7.00 update

The upcoming PlayStation 5 7.00 firmware update will reportedly bring a much-requested feature to the console. The reports indicate that the update will bring Discord integration to the PS5.

It’s been known that Sony has been looking to link the PlayStation brand with Discord. Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan announced a partnership with Discord all the way back in May of 2021. (Read: What the Sony Discord partnership means for gamers)

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network,” stated Ryan. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”

The result of this partnership was allowing PlayStation users to link their Discord accounts to their PSN accounts. This allowed the app to display users’ PSN ID on their Discord profile and also show when they were playing games on PS5 and even PS4.

That said, this initial move did not allow the use of the Discord app on the console—something which rival Microsoft enabled in September of 2022 when Xbox consoles received full Discord integration. The latter, allows Xbox users to use Discord for voice communication as well as join Discord servers directly on their console.

With this in mind, it’s highly likely that the same features will finally come to PS5 when the firmware update finally arrives. According to a report by Insider Gaming, PS5 firmware 7.00 should arrive on March 8, 2023, with a public beta test starting in the next few days. That said, sources state that the beta will not include Discord yet.

Instead, the beta looks to have users test other features of the 7.00 update, the biggest of which is the ability to stream PS5 games via cloud streaming. The feature will reportedly be included as part of PlayStation Plus’ Premium Tier when it launches.
