Final Fantasy VII Remake PC version datamined in the Epic Games Store Database

Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise, rejoice! In what is perhaps another power move by Epic Games, the a Final Fantasy VII Remake PC version is on the way—and it’s going to be available on the Epic Game Store. Well, that’s if you can believe the store listing in the Epic Game Store’s backend. However, key pieces of evidence say that this news is something we can all rely on.

EpicData, a website that studies and analyzes Epic Game Store’s backend, found this new addition during one of its research sessions. Normally, the website would release game prices, promos, updates, and special offers for games on the platform. However, on some occasions, EpicData is able to discover unreleased and unannounced games—which was the case for the discovery of the Final Fantasy VII Remake PC version.

Before EpicData’s discovery, the game was hidden in the “customAttributes” folder. It was a secret for a while, but anyone can see the name of the game on Cloud Saves because it indicates that it will be backed up from a destination named: “{UserDir}/My Games/FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE/EOS/{EpicID}/”. To further confirm that this is, indeed, for Final Fantasy VII, the filename “ff7remakedevice.sav” can also be seen in the folder.

According to the leak, the game is being developed by Square Enix Japan. The partnership between Square Enix and Epic Games is not unlikely, especially when you think about how the game runs on Epic’s own Unreal Engine. The partnership between the two game developers may have been forged because of it, and they may have struck the deal to ensure that the FF7 Remake for PC is launched on the Epic Games Store. Additionally, the Kingdom Hearts series was made available for PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive, and Neo: The World Ends With You is scheduled to launch on the platform soon, too. These two games’ releases further establish the working relationship between Epic and Square, and it won’t be surprising if they work on even more games together.

So, what will the PC version of the Final Fantasy VII Remake mean for Square Enix and Epic Games? The game will, arguably, be one of the more solid releases by Square Enix. By developing a PC version of the game, more gamers would certainly be able to play it. The current PC versions of Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XV are pretty great, so we can expect that the Final Fantasy VII Remake would turn out amazing, too.
