Gran Turismo 4 cheat codes discovered nearly two decades after the game’s release
It’s rare that something truly new is discovered in an old game, let alone one nearly two decades old. However, that’s exactly what’s happened with Gran Turismo 4. Cheat codes for the 2004 PlayStation 2 classic have only recently just been discovered.
Gran Turismo 4‘s long-hidden cheat codes were discovered by veteran player Nenkai, who posted their discovery on Twitter. While they demonstrate the cheats in action, they sadly don’t explain how they discovered them in the first place.
So many years and this game still holds surprises, GT4 does actually have cheat codes👀👇 pic.twitter.com/toyyIHIJKW

As for why they took so long to discover, the key lies in the fact that the cheats only become available once a grand total of 365 in-game days have passed—players need to have spent a year in-game.
Once the required time has passed, players can simply input one of the four codes.
- 10,000,000 Credits: In the GT mode screen, press Select, Left, Right, Right, Down, Up, Up, Left, Down, Up, Right, Left, Down, L1, R1, Select
- Pass a license: In the License Test selection screen, press Select, R1, Select, R1, Select, L2, L2, R2, R2, L1, Select, Select
- Gold any specific license test: In the License Test selection screen, press Select, Select, R1, R2, L2, L2, Select, L1, R1, Select, R2, L1, Select
- Gold any event: In the Event Course selection screen, press Select, L1, Up, Up, Select, R1, Down, Down, Select, L2, Select, R2, Select
Take note that the last apparently doesn’t always work. (Read:Â Neill Blomkamp to direct Gran Turismo movie, based on the Nissan PlayStation GT Academy)
In addition, an extra code that’s usable in the Mission Hall will also give 10,000,000 Credits. It’s assumed that this was implemented incorrectly by the developers and should allow the completion of any mission. This code is Select, R2, Select, R2, L1, L2, L2, Select, L1, R1, Select, R1, Select.
Of course, the discovery of these codes begs the question of whether or not other games in the series have similar time-locked cheat codes as well. Already, the license and gold codes have been shown to work in Tourist Trophy—Polyphony’s motorcycle-focused spin-off series—with the same 365 in-game day unlock condition. Perhaps there are more of these to be discovered in other games.
