New Xbox Series with 1TB of storage announced

Microsoft just announced a new Xbox Series S console with 1TB of SSD storage. The new Carbon Black Xbox Series S will launch on September 1 and will retail for $350 (Php 19,700 as of press time), $50 more than the original white Series S.

The new Carbon Black Xbox Series S with its 1TB of storage arrives at a time when video game install sizes are continuing to grow. Games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the more recently released Star Wars: Jedi Survivor can require over 100GB of hard drive space, even when run from a disc. This leaves very little space for other games when installed. (Read: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth comes in two discs)

While the new Carbon Black Xbox Series S will have more storage than the normal white Series S, it will not have updated hardware. As such, it will still play most games at lower resolutions or framerates than its more powerful Series X sibling.

That said, the Carbon Black Xbox Series S’s upgraded 1TB internal SSD puts it at parity with the Series X in terms of storage. This should ease the worries of any buyers looking at a Series S as a cheap entry point into the current generation of consoles but were worried about storage.

That said, both Xbox Series S and Series X can be upgraded with Microsoft’s proprietary Storage Expansion Cards. There were originally made by Seagate exclusively and retailed for $139.99 (Php 7,850) for 512 GB (and even more for the 1TB and 2TB models).

That exclusivity deal has ended allowing other party manufacturers, such as Western Digital, to make their own. As such Microsoft recently dropped the price on these to allow them to remain competitive.
