PlayStation 5 hits over 10 million in sales

The PlayStation 5, Sony’s newest generation console, has sold more than 10 million units since first launching on November 12, 2020.

This makes the PS5 the fastest-selling console in the company’s history, outpacing even the sales of its immediate predecessor, the PS4.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) said the 10-million milestone was reached as of July 18, 2021, or 248 days since launch.

“I can’t express enough the deep gratitude we feel for our passionate community of PlayStation fans who have embraced PS5, and the world-class development and publishing partners who bring such incredible gaming experiences to our platforms,” SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan said.

“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply. I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE.”

Aside from the PS5’s record sales, SIE achieved additional milestones across its portfolio of PlayStation Studios games. These include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games (over 6.5 million sales), MLB The Show 21 from San Diego Studio (over 2 million sales), Returnal from Housemarque (over 560,000 sales), and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart from Insomniac Games (over 1.1 million sales).

Players can look forward to the lineup of exclusive games from PlayStation Studios, including the new God of War: Ragnarok from Santa Monica Studios, Gran Turismo 7 from Polyphony Digital, and Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games.

Meanwhile, highly anticipated games from SIE’s partners include Battlefield 2042 from Electronic Arts, Deathloop from Bethesda, Far Cry 6 from Ubisoft, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits from Ember Lab.

“Pushing through supply challenges and a global pandemic, we’re proud to have delivered a transformational gaming experience that is captivating players around the world,” SVP of Global Sales and Business Operations Veronica Rogers said.

She attributed the PS5’s milestone to everyone at SIE, especially the Product Development and Hardware Engineering and Operations teams.

Their respective contributions include delivering innovations such as lightning-fast SSD, immersive 3D audio, and dynamic DualSense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. They also provided the resources to build the physical PS5 units and partnered with global Business Operations teams to deliver the console from its origin point to markets and customers around the world. “We are incredibly grateful to our fans for the terrific reception of PS5 and our growing portfolio of gaming entertainment. Without your support and confidence, this early success would not have been possible. We are making steady progress with available global supply and can’t wait for the day when everyone who wants a PS5 can easily get one,” Rogers said.

Sony Group Corporation on August 4 said their fiscal year 2021 forecast remains unchanged, sticking to their target of selling over 14.8 million PS5 units, which was the number of sales of PS4 units in the fiscal year after its launch.

The PS5 recorded 4.5 million and 3.3 million hardware unit sales, respectively, in Q3 and Q4 2020, resulting in 7.8 million sales for the fiscal year. This is on top of 2.3 million sales in Q1 2021.
