Sony acquires PC porting studio Nixxes

If you’ve been following the news on Sony, you would know that the multinational conglomerate has been busy working on various acquisitions throughout the year. Its first acquisition happened in February 2021, with the British music distribution company AWAL. Sony’s most recent acquisition happened on July 1, 2021, and the company purchased the Netherlands-based technical developer Nixxes Software.

This new Sony-Nixxes merger aims to develop the gaming experience for Sony’s customers, as Nixxes is the newest addition to Sony’s PlayStation arm. Nixxes Software specializes in developing PC ports and optimizations for many popular games, which is why it’s no surprise that Sony wants to add the company to its roster. So far, Nixxes has already worked on games such as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the Tomb Raider trilogy, and, its biggest game to date, Marvel’s Avengers.

As Sony is planning for more of its games to be ported to PCs, it makes sense that it acquired Nixxes. According to Herman Hulst, the Head of PlayStation Studios, Nixxes is set to be a valuable asset to the company, saying: “They have a passion for improving games and for delivering the best possible experience for gamers. Nixxes will be a strong asset for everyone across PlayStation Studios, helping our teams focus on their most important goal, which is to create unique PlayStation content at the best possible quality.”

Jurjen Katsman, the founder of Nixxes Software, also commemorated the acquisition by talking about how excited the Nixxes team was to work under PlayStation Studios. Katsman said: “…We’re looking forward to working with some of the most talented teams in the industry to deliver the highest-quality gameplay experiences for PlayStation fans.”

Over the past few years, Sony Interactive Entertainment has been making moves to bring PlayStation games to PC. Games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone now have Windows counterparts, and it seems that the recent acquisition will have more of Sony’s games follow suit. According to some leaks, Ghost of Tsushima and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End are two of the games that are currently in the works, but Sony hasn’t announced them officially yet.

No financial details about PlayStation’s acquisition of Nixxes were disclosed because of their contract, and it doesn’t seem to be the last company that PlayStation will be acquiring either. There are rumors that Bluepoint Games, the developer of the remake of Demon’s Souls, is up next on their list. Of course, however, this is all still speculative, and we will have to wait and see.

For some, it may seem like Sony and tech giant Microsoft are neck-in-neck in terms of acquiring different studios to beef up their own efforts in the entertainment realm. Just recently, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax for a whopping $7.5 billion. This deal will ensure that Starfield will be available for play only on Xbox. However, Hulst doesn’t see it this way. Right now, Sony’s head and the rest of his team are focused on ensuring that all games are as user-friendly as possible.
