Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics ending official support for Marvel’s Avengers, giving away cosmetics

Developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix announced that they were ending online support for Marvel’s Avengers.

A blog post signed by the “Marvel’s Avengers Development Team,” published last Friday, stated that all official support for the game will end on September 30, 2023. No new content or features will be added to Marvel’s Avengers after this date.

Despite the end of official support, the blog post states that players will still have access to both single- and multiplayer gameplay after the aforementioned date.

In addition, to soften the blow, the developers will make all in-game cosmetics from the game’s marketplace available for free to all players starting March 31, 2023.

“As a show of our appreciation for our community, starting March 31, 2023 we will make all the game’s Marketplace, Challenge Card, and Shipment cosmetic content available to all players for free,” the blog post reads. “Every single Outfit, Takedown, Emote, and Nameplate from the Marketplace, Challenge Cards, and Shipments will be free for all players from this date onwards if you own a copy of the game.”

“Gifting the full library of Marketplace cosmetic content is a way to thank our community by letting everyone experience the breadth and depth of content in Marvel’s Avengers.”

Crystal Dynamics was sold by Square Enix to the Embracer Group last year. During this time, it was made clear that any games released prior to the Embracer purchase would continue to be supported. (Read: Embracer Group buying Tomb Raider studio and more from Square Enix)

That Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are ending support for Marvel’s Avengers could suggest that there are simply not enough people wanting to play or buy stuff in the game anymore.

That said, the blog post makes it clear that players will still be able to play the game, in both single- and multiplayer, despite the shutdown—there just won’t be any updates or technical support for it beyond September 30.

For more details on what the shutdown entails for existing players, Crystal Dynamics has put up a series of charts and FAQs on the official site.
