AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT & 7700 XT take aim at Nvidia’s RTX 4070 & 4060 Ti at better pricepoints
AMD revealed its new upper mid-range Radeon RX 7800 XT and 7700 XT GPUs at Gamescom earlier today. The cards, which are set to launch on September 6, look to be taking aim at Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 while undercutting it by quite a fair amount.
The RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are based on the same RDNA 3 graphics architecture as the other 7000-series cards. Built on a more efficient manufacturing process than the outgoing 6000-series, RDNA ‘s new chiplet-based design means that both cards draw less power than their predecessors, while still offering performance gains.
In addition, RDNA 3 supports features such as DisplayPort 2.1 and hardware AV1 video encoding. They also support FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3, the latest version of AMD’s GPU-agnostic AI upscaling technology. (Read: What AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution means for GPU-starved gamers)
But features aren’t what most people who’ll be considering the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT will be looking at, but rather performance. For its part, AMD claimed that the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT compare favorably to Nvidia’s RTX 4070 and the 16GB version of the RTX 4060 Ti.
AMD claims that both cards can average over 60fps in the latest games at 1440p at maximum settings with FSR turned off. These include the notoriously problematic PC ports of The Last of Us Part 1 and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Meanwhile, both GPUs hit over 100 fps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
While the performance numbers are mostly in line with what could be expected from an upper mid-range GPU nowadays, where the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT look to impress with is their price.
The RX 7800 XT is set to retail at $500 (approximately Php 28,000) while the RT 7700 XT will go for $450 (around Php 25,000). These fill in a nice gap between Nvidia’s 16GB RTX 4060 Ti, at $400, and its RTX 4070 at $600—a whole $100 more than the RX 7800 XT. All the while, both cards look to offer competitive, or even superior performance, with the RTX 7800 XT possibly beating the more expensive RTX 4070 in rasterized games (and possibly a few ray-traced ones).
Of course, we won’t really know how the new AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700XT truly compare to existing cards on the market until people get their hands on them. Both cards are set to launch on September 6. In addition, to sweeten the deal, AMD is including a copy of Bethesda’s space RPG Starfield with both cards, as well as every Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 GPU sold between now and September 30, 2023.
