The RGB-equipped Razer smart mask is becoming a reality

Back in January, Razer announced “Project Hazel,” a project centered on developing the brand’s own spin on the face masks that have become a part of our everyday lives. Hazel is Razer’s initiative to develop the world’s most intelligent mask, and the brand showcased the prototype on its website. At the time, the Razer smart mask was still but a concept. But in late March, Razer revealed that it would be turning Project Hazel into a real product! Huzzah!

To give you a little recap, let’s run down all of the features that Razer wants its smart masks to have. According to its January press release, the smart masks would use a removable and rechargeable active ventilation system to facilitate a user’s airflow. The mask would have medical-grade respirator protection, similar to that of an N95 mask, allowing it to filter out 95% of the particles in our air. However, perhaps the coolest and most remarkable thing about the Razer smart mask is its design.

Looking at the mask, it looks like something that came straight out of a steampunk video game. Its design showcases a transparent front panel that would allow people to see your facial expressions, while those who are hearing-impaired can communicate with you more easily through lip reading. The mask will also be utilizing VoiceAmp technology that will combine a built-in microphone and amplifier to let people understand what you are saying loudly and clearly. Finally, to up the Razer smart mask’s cool factor, it will even light up! The mask will feature the famed Razer Chroma RGB lighting to give each user a more personalized feel to their smart mask.

Razer’s CEO, Min-Liang Tan, revealed to Yahoo! Finance that Project Hazel was a go back in March. After some serious brainstorming, the Razer team came to the realization that the project may still be relevant in the future following vaccine rollouts across the globe. Although more and more individuals around the world are already getting vaccinated, it is still highly likely that people would be wearing masks for the foreseeable future. After all, there are still many factors to consider when dealing with the COVID-19 virus. So, as a result, the team decided to make the Razer smart mask a reality.

This is what Tan had to say: “With that in mind, we are going to go ahead and solve the sustainable aspect of the mask which is one of the big things for us. Project Hazel is going to be a reality. We are going to make it happen and I think we all will be, unfortunately, wearing masks for a long time to come.”

Razer had announced Project Hazel during the 2021 CES, and it received positive feedback from many tech enthusiasts. Apart from its stunning design, the mask might just be a handy tool in preventing the spread of the virus. Back in January, Razer had revealed that should the project come to fruition, they will be working with scientists and medical professionals to ensure the mask’s quality. We expect to find out more about the Razer smart mask’s production and distribution in the months to come.
