Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be part of Evo 2023
When the world’s biggest fighting game tournament returns in August, it will feature not only the latest fighting games but also a fan-favorite classic. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will return to the competitive spotlight as part of the Evo 2023 lineup.
Released in 2011, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 remained a mainstay of Evo up until 2017. During its six-year run, it became one of the biggest, most competitive games at the event with no single player winning more than once. Among those who won the tournament include legendary Marvel vs. Capcom player Justin Wong as well as Fil-Am champion Ryan “Filipino Champ” Ramirez.
After its final Evo appearance, the series failed to return to the Evo main stage, especially after its successor, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, failed to gain competitive traction, in part due to a lack of corporate support.
Now, over a decade since its original release, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 returns to the main stage at Evo 2023.
This isn’t the first time Evo tried to bring back a classic Marvel vs. Capcom game—the tournament previously planned to bring Marvel vs. Capcom 2 back at Evo 2020. But these initial plans were put on hold when the global pandemic hit. Now, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be Evo’s first annual Throwback Tournament, with the event set to host a classic fighting game every year.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be joining some of today’s biggest fighting games. The biggest of these will be Street Fighter 6, which is expected to bring a large number of players due to the $2 million prize pool Capcom announced for the 2023 Capcom Pro Tour. Other games include The King of Fighters XV, Guilty Gear Strive, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken 7, Melty Blood Type: Lumina and Mortal Kombat 11. All of these will have a minimum $25,000 prize pool.
In addition, Cygames will also be hosting a pre-release tournament at Evo for its upcoming Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.
Evo 2023 will take place from August 4 to 6, 2023 at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
