Mask Network acquires Pawoo.net, the second largest Mastodon instance

The Social Coop Limited, an affiliate of the Mask Network, acquired Pawoo.net, one of the largest Mastodon instances. A new team took over the operation and maintenance of Pawoo.net on Dec. 21, 2022.

Mastodon presents itself as a decentralized alternative to social networks like Twitter. Unlike the latter, Mastodon distributes its network over separate, user-made instances, each functioning as its own independent, Twitter-like social network. These instances, however, can all link to each other as part of what Mastodon calls the “Fediverse.” (Read: Mastodon is not Twitter, and it has enough differences that we should pay attention)

Pawoo, the second largest Mastodon instance, has been in operation since 2017. The network has drawn around 800,000 users from all over the world, including illustrators, novelists, anime fans and music enthusiasts. The network calls itself the “place to enjoy creative activity and unfettered communication.”

The Mask Network, also started in 2017, aims to create an easy-to-use bridge between Web 2.0 to Web 3.0-era decentralized apps. The Mask extension currently allow users access to decentralized social messaging, payment networks, file storage and more.

Mask is currently partnered with or supported by other Web 3.0 companies such as Binance, OKX, Gitcoin and more.

Mask has also raised over $50 million from private and institutional backers while obtaining thousands of users. In July of 2022, Mask announced the launch of a $42 million Bonfire Union fund to strategically invest in decentralized infrastructure, creative content and social networks.

Mask acquiring Pawoo.net adds another social network to its growing portfolio. The team at the latter already maintains two of the most active Mastodon instances, mstdn.jp and mastodon.cloud. This is in addition building the first official app for Mastodon in collaboration with the Mastodon core builder team and New York City-based design form Lickability.
