Xbox price increases may be coming soon

Following similar moves by rival Sony, Microsoft revealed that Xbox price increases may also be in the works.

Based on reporting by the Verge‘s Tom Warren, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said at a Wall Street Journal conference earlier this week that “I do think at some point we’ll have to raise the prices on certain things, but going into this holiday we thought it was important to maintain the prices.”

“We’ve held price on our console, we’ve held price on games… and our subscription,” he added. “I don’t think we’ll be able to do that forever. I do think at some point we’ll have to raise some prices on certain things…”

Spencer’s statement indicated that the Xbox price increases were not coming anytime soon—at least not within the upcoming holiday season. The statement, however, did not give any indication of what exactly would see a price bump.

With Sony already having raised prices on PlayStation 5 games, and many other publishers also implementing similar hikes, an increase in the price of Xbox Series games may seem inevitable. In the same vein, Xbox Game Pass subscription price increases may also be in the cards.

A bigger question, however, would be whether or not Microsoft is considering Xbox console price increases. The prices of game consoles traditionally decrease over time. This made Sony’s decision to raise the price of its PlayStation 5 console, due to the current inflationary crisis, big news. With this in mind, Microsoft could also look to follow suit and raise the price of either Xbox Series X, entry-level Xbox Series S models, or even both.
