Older Apple TV models to lose YouTube app

Nowadays, you can find videos on YouTube that cover basically anything you can think of. You can watch videos on your smartphone, tablet or even your TV screen. However, for those who are still using older Apple TV models, you may not be able to enjoy YouTube for very long. Recently, users of third-generation Apple TVs were informed that by next month, their TVs would no longer support the YouTube app. This is what has been popping up on their screens:

“Starting early March, the YouTube app will no longer be available on Apple TV (3rd generation). You can still watch YouTube on Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, iPhone, or iPad. With AirPlay, you can also stream YouTube from your iOS device directly to any Apple TV (3rd generation or later).”

Apple TV losing YouTube is not new; just five years ago, the YouTube app disappeared from a lot of second-generation Apple TV units. This development came without a warning, which left many users frustrated when they could no longer access the app after the familiar red icon vanished from the Home screen and Settings. This time around, users are notified and offered ample time to adjust to losing the app on their TVs.

Users of third-generation Apple TVs would need to cast their YouTube videos from another device using AirPlay to access and view YouTube content on their TVs. A YouTube spokesperson told Gizmodo that this change was brought about by YouTube’s efforts to develop and continually improve the platform, which sometimes prompts them to alter their list of supported devices.

While this may be the case, it is a different story for users of newer Apple TV models; the change will not affect them and they can still access the app on their TVs and stream YouTube content. Those with Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, iPhone, and iPad can still use YouTube directly from their devices. (Read: Leak hints that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone)

Late last year, it was reported that a new Apple TV model will be released in 2021. However, it is reportedly roughly three times more expensive than your standard streaming device. A 32GB model will cost around $180, while a 64GB model will cost around $200. While Apple promises a premium, high-quality product, there are other models available on the market that offer similar specs for less. Hopefully, Apple would consider slashing its price to cater to more users and compete with other streaming devices.
