Here’s just about all big PlayStation Showcase announcements
Sony held its first big PlayStation Showcase since was back in September of 2021. With a bigger stage than the usual State of Play, the company pulled out all the stops with more than a few big announcements, including the remake of a classic PlayStation 2 game.
Without much further ado, here’s just about every major reveal from the PlayStation Showcase.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater gets a remake
After weeks of rumors that Konami was working on a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, we finally got our first glimpse of the game—called Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater—today in the form of a brief yet cool CG teaser featuring animals eating each other. It’s coming to the PlayStation 5, but no release date has been set. In addition, the trailer below also confirmed that the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is also coming to PlayStation 5 later this year.
Helldivers has a sequel with a new point of view
Popular top-down multiplayer shooter Helldivers is getting a sequel. Helldivers 2 will be released on PS5 and PC next year. Unlike the original, however, the newly unveiled game appears to be a third-person shooter.
Alan Wake 2 finally makes its debut
Remedy’s horror-focused sequel to the 2010’s Alan Wake finally has a trailer. Beyond just showing the game off, the new trailer hints at a possible second playable character—an FBI agent searching for the titular protagonist. Alan Wake 2 hits PlayStation 5 and other platforms on October 17, 2023.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage has a release date
Assassin’s Creed Mirage‘s October 12, 2023 release date was actually released a few hours before the show. That said, the trailer at the PlayStation Showcase should still impress fans as the series returns to its stealth-focused roots.
Fairgame$ revealed
The first PlayStation Showcase announcement, Fairgame$‘s trailer featured a gang of young kids who, fed up with all the rich bastards controlling the world, decide to raid a luxury factory with nice weapons. During the raid, another gang of disgruntled kids appears looking to rob the same factory, setting up a fight between both groups.
Immortals of Aveum release date
Sony and EA unveiled a new trailer for Immortals of Aveum, which featured a lot of first-person wizard fighting. This interesting-looking game is set to be released on July 20, 2023.
Ghostrunner 2 arrives sometime this year
A sequel to the hardcore first-person slasher Ghostrunner is not only in the works, but is also launching sometime this year.
Phantom Blade 0 looks like Sekiro mixed with Ghost of Tsushima
Looking like a cross between Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima with its frantic third-person action, Phantom Blade 0 differentiates itself by giving its protagonist only 66 days to live.
Sword of the Sea isn’t a sequel to Journey, but it sure looks like it
This new game by the developers behind Abzu and Journey may look like a sequel to the latter, but we’re assured that Sword of the Sea is not.
The Talos Principle 2 arrives this year
This sequel to the cerebral puzzler by Croteam—the same developers behind boomer shooter Serious Sam—arrives sometime this year.
Cat Quest: Pirates of the Purribean is coming next year
This cute game features pirate cats robbing other pirate cats. Sadly for lovers of cats and cat puns, they’ll have to wait for 2024 for this to arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Revenant Hill is yet another cat-themed game
Coming to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Revenant Hill focuses on a cat named Twigs that’s trying to become a witch’s familiar.
Neva will make you sad in 2024
From the team behind indie darling Gris, Neva looks to be yet another game that’s going to pull at players’ heartstrings. Neva launches in 2024.
Foamstars is Square Enix’s take on Splatoon but with foam and waifus
Square Enix’s new shooter Foamstars looks to take on the formula Nintendo perfected with Splatoon, but, as the game’s name implies, substituting the paint with foam and anthropomorphic squid with animé pop stars.
Final Fantasy XVI continues to impress
Of course, Square Enix also used the showcase to show off yet another Final Fantasy XVI trailer. The company is calling this a “launch trailer,” despite the game’s June 23, 2023 release date still being about a month away, that said, it’s probably close enough considering how long it’s taken for the game to out.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink brings the hit mobile game to console
Cygames is bringing its hit mobile RPG series to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 (and PC) with Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Technically, this isn’t the first time a Granblue game has hit these platforms, but it’s the first time a proper RPG is being brought over—2019’s Granblue Fantasy: Versus being a fighting game spinoff.
Plucky Squire mixes 2D and 3D visuals to create a unique-looking fantasy adventure
A new trailer for Plucky Squire dropped, showcasing the game’s unique mix of 2D and 3D visuals. The game is expected to hit PlayStation 5, as well as other consoles and PC, sometime this year.
Teardown promises voxel-based destruction
Another game with a unique artstyle. Teardown uses voxels—volumed pixels—instead of polygons to create its unique destruction-based puzzles. Teardown hits PlayStation 5 later in 2023.
Ultros is a bright and trippy cartoon platformer
Ultros looks less like a video game and more like a 1960s acid trip. This platformers graphics will surely catch people’s eyes when it launches in 2024.
Towers of Aghasba takes on the survival genre
Yet another survival game, Towers of Aghasba promises to challenge players with giant creatures and unique underwater exploration, on top of pretty graphics. Will those be enough to help it stand out in an absolutely crowded genre? Only time will tell.
Street Fighter 6 gets a new trailer
Street Fighter 6 is a little over a week away from its launch so Capcom is pulling out all the stops with its promotion. The latest trailer gives a few more hints of the game’s story that’s set to play out in its expansive open-world “World Tour” mode—featuring the player’s own custom character. Dragon’s Dogma 2 finally has a proper trailer
Almost a year since the game was first announced, Dragon’s Dogma 2 finally has a proper trailer. The original game was known for its in-depth and highly freeform combat system and, from the trailer below, the sequel is set to deliver more of the same.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2 brings the series to VR
The Five Nights series continues with this VR sequel to the first-person spin-off Help Wanted. This new installment in the series will be released in late 2023. In the meantime, check out the jump scare in the trailer below.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is getting a VR mode
Speaking of VR, the recently released Resident Evil 4 Remake is getting a VR mode. Capcom isn’t telling much about this, but the VR modes in previous Resident Evil games have been pretty good, so it might be safe to expect more of the same here.
Synapse is another new VR shooter
Synapse is yet another VR game built around running and shooting people. While the concept is rather played out, the game does feature some trippy visuals and a unique setting that looks to take place in the center of someone’s mind. Whether this is enough to make it stand out, we’ll find out on July 4, 2023.
Hit VR rhythm game Beat Saber is finally arriving on PlayStation VR
Beat Saber is arguably one of the biggest VR games out now and its absence from PlayStation VR has been rather notable. That ends today as the game is finally on Sony’s new VR platform. In addition, the game is also getting a new Queen-themed music pack.
Bungie’s first non-Destiny release in years returns them to their roots
Before Bungie made a name for itself with Destiny and the early Halo games, it cut its teeth on the Marathon series on Macintosh. Now, the company is returning to that franchise with a new game, simply called Marathon. That said, the teaser below gives very few details, so we’ll have to wait a bit more to learn about the new game.
Destiny 2 has one final big expansion
Of course, Bungie isn’t abandoning its cash-cow looter shooter Destiny 2. At the PlayStation Showcase, the studio dropped a trailer for Destiny 2‘s final big expansion, The Final Shape.
Concord is a PvP shooter with a Destiny-like aesthetic
PvP-focused players looking for something with an aesthetic similar to Destiny may want to check out Firewalk Studios’ Concord. While it’s in no way related to Bungie’s hit franchise, it does feature a similar look. That said, nothing more was revealed about the game at the PlayStation Showcase, other than it hits PlayStation 5 and PC in 2024.
Project Q lets players stream PlayStation 5 games on the go
Despite looking like a cross between a DualSense controller and a Nintendo Switch, Project Q is not a new portable PlayStation console. Instead, the device is meant to allow players to stream games from their PlayStation 5 consoles via remote play. In addition, Sony also showed off a set oof matching earbuds for anyone trying to use the device without disturbing the people around them.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gives us more Spider-Man
Sony saved the best for last at the PlayStation Showcase, ending the show with the much-awaited Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The first true current-gen entry in the franchise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gives us more Spider-Man—two, in fact, with players able to play both Peter Parker and Miles Morales versions of the wall-crawler. In addition, we get our first glimpses of the Venom suit. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives in the Fall of 2023.
All in all, Sony’s 2023 PlayStation Showcase lived up to its billing as a big event, giving players more reason to stick to PlayStation 5 and even PlayStation 4. Of course, Xbox has its own showcase taking place in June, so expect Microsoft to fire back with its own reveals then.
